Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Winter Stakes is a Group 1 Australian thoroughbred horse race held under set weight conditions for fillies and mares aged 3 years old and upwards.

It is run over a distance of 1400m. Prizemoney in 2008 was AUD$500,000.

The Winter Stakes is conducted by the Queensland Turf Club and run at the Eagle Farm Racecourse in June. This race is the final Group 1 of the season in Australia.

The highlight event at the meeting, the Winter Stakes is accompanied by two other Group status races - the $200,000 Group 3 Tattersall's Cup and the $175,000 Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes.

Races including the Group 3 Lady of the Turf Stakes (1350m) at Doomben in May and the Group 2 Dane Ripper Quality (1400m) serve as excellent preparatory runs for the Winter Stakes hopefuls.

The last female to take out the Dane Ripper Quality - Winter Stakes double was Tripping in 1996.
